Geetika Sood, MD, ScM
Dr. Sood is a Medical Director in the Division of Epidemiology. She joined New York State Department of Health in October 2023 and was appointed to long COVID in April 2024. She is an Infectious Disease physician by training with experience in medical education, hospital infection control, quality improvement and performance measurement. She holds an academic appointment at Johns Hopkins University, and she most recently served as a Medical Director for COVID at the Rhode Island Department of Health.
Amanda Lans, MD, PhD, MS
Dr. Lans is a Medical Epidemiologist for Long COVID at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. With a PhD focused on social determinants of health and health literacy, Dr. Lans honed her research skills as a fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School. She earned her MD and a Master of Science in Clinical Research at the University of Utrecht, the Netherlands. In her current role, Dr. Lans supports Long COVID epidemiology and surveillance efforts, engages with healthcare providers to enhance understanding and treatment of Long COVID, and leads initiatives to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and improve resource accessibility, with a focus on health equity for New York City's most impacted communities.
David Putrino, PhD
Dr. Putrino trained as a physiotherapist in Australia before completing a PhD in Neuroscience. He is currently a Professor in the Department of Rehabilitation and Human Performance at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City and is the Nash Family Director of the Cohen Center for Recovery from Complex Chronic Illness. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, David has been recognized globally as a leading expert in the assessment, treatment and underlying pathophysiology of Long COVID. His team has managed the care of over 3000 people with Long COVID and published multiple peer-reviewed scientific papers on the topic. In 2019, he was named "Global Australian of the Year" for his contributions to healthcare.
Juan Pablo Wisnivesky, MD, DrPH
Dr. Wisnivesky is the Drs. Richard and Mortimer Bader Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Dr. Wisnivesky is a health services investigator with a research interest in chronic pulmonary disease self-management, lung cancer outcomes, disparities in care, and Long Covid. He received his MPH and DrPH in Biostatistics at The Joseph L. Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University and his MD at the University of Buenos Aires School of Medicine in Argentina.
Dr. Wisnivesky has received multiple grants from the National Institutes of Health to support his research and he directs a federally funded Cancer Prevention and Control Training Program focused on underserved priority populations. He has published several manuscripts addressing issues related to lung cancer epidemiology, asthma, COPD. More recently, he has been directly involved in research related to the long-term consequences of COVID-19 infection including leading the Mount Sinai COVID-19 Registry and being one of the principal investigators for the Mount Sinai site of RECOVER, a NIH-funded initiative to learn about the long-term effects of COVID-19.
Dr. Wisnivesky is an active faculty in the American Thoracic Society's MECOR Program and was appointed to the Coordinating Committee for the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute National Asthma Education and Prevention Program. He is also Chair of the Health Equality Committee of the American Thoracic Society and a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation
Alba Azola, MD
Dr. Alba is an Assistant Professor for the Departments of Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine and Pediatrics. Director of the Long COVID Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Clinic and Co-director of Clinical and Translational Research Core of the JH-UTSW Brain Health Program. She is a co-investigator in several NIH, PCORI, and CDC-sponsored studies on Long COVID. She has co-authored several guidance statements on managing Long COVID symptoms, including fatigue, dysautonomia, and cardiovascular complications.
Micheal Peluso, MD, MPhil, MHS, DTM&H
Dr. Michael Peluso is an infectious disease physician and researcher at the University of California, San Francisco. In March 2020, he implemented the UCSF Long-term Impact of Infection with Novel Coronavirus (LIINC, pronounced "link") research program, which was one of the first post-COVID research programs in the world which has supported over 75 collaborations investigating the causes of Long COVID. He is responsible for implementation of the UCSF sites for the national RECOVER Long COVID program and co-directs the SFGH Long COVID Clinic, which is supported by the Agency for Health Research and Quality.
