Statement From Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald On World Suicide Prevention Day
ALBANY, N.Y. (September 10, 2024) - "It is important we stop and acknowledge World Suicide Prevention Day—to provide awareness and take action to help prevent suicides. Suicide is a social issue that affects everyone no matter their race, gender or socioeconomic status.
"World Suicide Prevention Day was created in 2003 by the International Association for Suicide Prevention in conjunction with the World Health Organization (WHO). On September 10 every year, we are encouraged to raise awareness and are reminded that suicides are preventable.
"This year's theme is 'Changing the Narrative on Suicide.' It is so important that we not only reduce the stigma around suicide, but we also engage in honest and encouraging conversations on how to prevent them. Changing the narrative is about shifting how we think about this complex issue and learning how to extend understanding and compassion to those who may be suffering.
"The New York State Department of Health will do all that we can to continue to advocate for the prioritization of mental health, access to quality care for all New Yorkers and resources to help all those in need.
"Let's continue to raise awareness and talk about this issue with our loved ones openly.
"And today I encourage you all to extend kindness to everyone you encounter. We never know the silent battles that people are fighting."
