Statement From Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald On World Mental Health Day
ALBANY, N.Y. (October 10, 2024) - "It is important we stop and acknowledge World Mental Health Day and remember to take care of ourselves in both our professional and personal lives.
"World Mental Health Day was first celebrated in 1992 as an initiative by the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH) to raise awareness about mental health issues and support mental health awareness efforts.
"This year's theme 'Mental Health at Work' is important because it highlights several facets of mental health in the workplace such as stress management, workplace conditions and inclusion.
"As a leader, one should promote workplace mental health by expressing gratitude and empathy to their employees, prioritizing self-care and rest and being a reliable source of support. It's equally vital that leaders check in with themselves and give themselves the same grace they extend to their employees.
"The New York State Department of Health will do all that we can to prioritize mental health and provide quality resources and care to New Yorkers in need.
"Today I encourage you all to have open and honest discussions about mental health and to show love, compassion and respect to yourselves and your neighbors."
