New York State Department of Health Recommends 2024–2025 COVID-19 Vaccination for All New Yorkers Ages 6-Months and Older
CDC Recommends Second Dose of 2024-2025 COVID-19 Vaccine for the Immunocompromised and Adults 65+
ALBANY, N.Y. (November 7, 2024) – The New York State Department of Health continues to encourage all New Yorkers over the age of 6 months to receive the new COVID-19 vaccine as respiratory illness season begins. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently announced their recommendation that adults ages 65 and older and those who are moderately or severely immunocompromised should receive a second dose of the 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccine six months after their first dose.
"As older adults and the immunocompromised are at an increased risk for severe disease from COVID-19, it is important that they get their second shot of the 2024-2025 vaccine," State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald said. "Vaccination as recommended continues to be the most important thing we can do to protect ourselves from currently circulating variants as well as the effects of long COVID. I encourage all New Yorkers to take control of their health and avoid missing out on holiday gatherings and events; get vaccinated today."
These updated recommendations by the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices' (ACIP) also allow for flexibility for additional doses (i.e., three or more) for those who are moderately or severely immunocompromised, in consultation with their healthcare provider (a strategy known as shared clinical decision making).
Commissioner Dr. McDonald has issued a standing order that allows eligible New Yorkers to receive the COVID-19 vaccine at any pharmacy without a separate prescription from their physician. An updated standing order that reflects the second dose recommendation for older adults and the immunocompromised is coming shortly.
