Statement From New York State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald On Preparing for A Healthy Holiday Season

ALBANY, N.Y. (December 23, 2024) – "As we enjoy the holiday season with our loved ones, I remind New Yorkers to take precautions to keep everyone safe and healthy."

"Sharing a delicious festive meal is a way to create memories and connect to others. Remember to keep perishable food cold, thaw frozen meat in the refrigerator and heat it to the correct temperature, keep preparation areas clean, and thoroughly wash your hands while handling and cooking food."

"A 'little cold' can seriously affect older loved ones and babies. If you are experiencing symptoms of illness, such as fever, cough, sore throat, or runny nose, consider staying home or wearing a mask to avoid spreading that illness to your family and friends."

"RSV, COVID and flu is affecting New Yorkers, but New York State has a gift for you--vaccines. We have three safe and effective vaccines that can protect from flu, COVID and RSV. I encourage all New Yorkers to get vaccinated before the holidays, so illness does not prevent you from enjoying your holiday celebrations."

"Please watch the little ones when opening gifts and playing to avoid choking hazards from toys and decorations."

"I wish you and all those you cherish and hold dear peace, love, healing and even more beautiful memories this holiday season."
