Statement From State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald on Martin Luther King Jr. Day
ALBANY, N.Y. (January 12, 2026) - “On Monday, we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his lifelong commitment to equality, justice and human dignity.
“At the New York State Department of Health, our mission is to protect and promote the health and well-being of all New Yorkers, built on a foundation of health equity. In the spirit of Dr. King’s work, we strive every day to reduce health disparities, address bias in health care and ensure everyone has a fair opportunity to live full and healthy lives.
“Dr. King is a source of hope, courage and compassion. While he worked tirelessly to confront injustice, many inequities still exist today. Too often, systemic racism continues to affect health outcomes in our communities.
“Dr. King once said, ‘Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane.’ During these unprecedented times, his words continue to guide and inspire our work.
“Each day, I am happy to stand with the dedicated public servants as we work to make New York healthier and more equitable for everyone—no matter who they are, where they come from or where they live.
We remain committed to advancing health equity and honoring Dr. King’s legacy through action, compassion and service.”
