New York State Department of Health Announces State Landmarks to Be Illuminated Blue in Honor of World Parkinson’s Day
Sixteen Landmarks to be Illuminated on the Evening of April 11
ALBANY, N.Y. (April 10, 2026) – The New York State Department of Health today announced landmarks across the state will be lit blue on the evening of April 11 in recognition of World Parkinson's Day. Parkinson's disease is a movement disorder that can cause tremors, slowness, stiffness and problems with balancing and walking.
State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald said, "Parkinson's disease is a lifelong and progressive disease, meaning symptoms will slowly worsen over time. It's critical that individuals experiencing movement difficulties speak with a health care provider who can determine the best course of treatment to improve quality of life and slow the disease from progressing. I thank Governor Hochul for illuminating state landmarks in honor of those impacted by Parkinson's disease. I hope, through continued awareness and research, a cure can be found for this lifechanging disease."
Living with Parkinson's disease can carry additional challenges, including memory impairment, dementia, speech changes, depression, anxiety and sleep issues. While the exact causes of Parkinson's disease are not fully understood, researchers believe the disease may develop from a combination of environmental and genetic factors. Additional information, including symptoms, data and resources, can be found on the New York State Department of Health's Parkinson's Disease and Parkinsonism Dashboard.
