Statement From State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald on Staying Healthy During the Holiday Season
ALBANY, N.Y. (November 5, 2026) – "As New Yorkers get ready to gather with loved ones this holiday season, I encourage everyone to take simple steps to protect their health and the health of those around them.
"I urge New Yorkers to stay up to date on recommended vaccinations, including the seasonal flu, COVID and RSV vaccines. The flu season arrived early this year and along with practicing good hand hygiene, the seasonal flu vaccine is the best protection we have from serious illness or complications from flu.
"Vaccines save lives, including the lives of very young children who are too young to receive certain vaccines and those at higher risk for serious illness.
"To ensure the best protection from illness, be sure to get vaccinated at least two weeks before large gatherings or travel and always stay home if you are sick.
"Together, we can reduce the spread of illness and ensure a safer, healthier season for everyone."
