Hunger Prevention and Nutrition Assistance Program (HPNAP)
What is HPNAP?
The U.S. Department of Agriculture reports that more than two million New Yorkers, 12% of the population, have limited or uncertain access to food due to lack of money and other resources.
Approximately 56% of New York's residents have incomes at or below 200% of the federal poverty level and may be eligible for federal food assistance programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). But these programs do not adjust for New York State's higher costs for housing, utilities and food. HPNAP helps to fill this gap.
For more than 35 years, HPNAP has provided state and federal funds to improve the quality of food distributed to an estimated 2,700 Emergency Food Relief Organizations (EFRO) in New York State. These EFROs include food banks, food pantries, soup kitchens, and emergency shelters which have provided more than 425 million meals each year to people who are in need.
