Cancer Reporting
All laboratories (independent, as well as hospital-based) holding permits to conduct pathology testing for New York State residents or providers are required to report positive results on reportable cancers to the NYS Department of Health. ECLRS is an efficient way for independent laboratories to become compliant with the cancer reporting mandate as specified in the Public Health Law, Article 24, Title 1, Section 2401, Whenever an examination of a tissue specimen in a laboratory discloses the existance of cancer or other malignant disease, the person in charge of such laboratory or the person making such examination shall immediately but not later than one hundred eighty days report the same together with all the facts in connection therewith to the department. For hospital based laboratories, submitting laboratory consult-only data utilizing the ECLRS system is in addition to their hospital's regular cancer reporting.

Cancer Reportable Conditions
Anyone diagnosed with invasive or in situ cancer (except basal and squamous cell cancer of the skin and in situ cervical cancer).
All intracranial neoplasms, including benign, boderline, uncertain and malignant neoplasms of the brain and other parts of the central nervous system. (Brain, Cranial nerves, Cerebral meninges, Pituitary gland, Pineal gland, Craniopharyngeal duct, and Spinal cord.)
AIDS with specified malignant neoplasm: report only the associated malignancy, not HIV/AIDS.
Ovarian tumors of low malignant potential, borderline malignancy, and uncertain behavior are reportable for cystic, mucinous and serous neoplasms.
