Office of Drug User Health Provider Resources

Buprenorphine is an effective treatment for opioid use disorder. It prevents drug withdrawal, blocks, or diminishes the effects of other opioids, and prevents the powerful cravings that accompany the reduction of opioid use.

The risk of an opioid overdose is also reduced for persons taking buprenorphine. Recently passed legislation (Chapter 432 of the Laws of 2021) will significantly expand buprenorphine and methadone access in correctional settings.
