Preventing Type 2 Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes prevention is proven, possible, and powerful. Taking small steps, such as eating less and moving more to lose weight, can help prevent or delay type 2 diabetes and related health problems.
The Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), was a research study, which showed that people could prevent or delay type 2 diabetes even if they were at high risk for the disease.
Below, are some steps people can take to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes
- Losing small amounts of weight (5 to 7 percent of total body weight)
- Making healthy food choices
- Being more physically active, for at least 150 minutes per week
- Participating in a CDC-recognized diabetes prevention lifestyle change program (NDPP) to learn skills and get resources to help make healthy changes
