Traumatic Brain Injury: Data & Statistics
Traumatic brain injuries can result in long term problems with independent function, requiring long-term care, and increased life-long expenses.
Data from deaths due to traumatic brain injury has only been collected since 2008. For each 100,000 New York State residents, the rate of death from traumatic brain injury has remained steady between 10.6 and 11.8.
The rate of hospitalizations due to traumatic brain injury, per 100,000 New Yorkers, climbed steadily between 2001 and 2009 from 75.7 to 100.5. The rate of hospitalization has since decreased and in 2014 was 96.0.
Emergency department visit data has only been collected since 2005. For each 100,000 New Yorkers, the rate increased over time from a low of 359.5 in 2005 to 720.9 in 2014.
