The Division of Chronic Disease Prevention has five bureaus:

  1. Tobacco Control;
  2. Community Chronic Disease Prevention (which houses the Asthma Control, Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention, Diabetes Prevention, Disability and Health, and State Physical Activity and Nutrition programs);
  3. Cancer Prevention and Control;
  4. Cancer Epidemiology; and
  5. Chronic Disease Evaluation and Research.

Bureaus

The Bureau of Tobacco Control oversees the New York State Tobacco Control Program. The program uses science and policy to reduce illness, disability, and death caused by using commercial tobacco and nonmedical nicotine products and from breathing in secondhand smoke. The Tobacco Control Program focuses on groups most harmed by commercial tobacco and e-cigarette marketing, advertising, and use.

The Bureau of Community Chronic Disease Prevention leads efforts to prevent and manage chronic conditions by implementing priority federal and state evidence-based strategies through policy, systems, and environmental changes.

The Bureau of Cancer Prevention and Control works towards cancer-related health equity through evidence-based programming and partnership building, funds cancer prevention, screening and survivorship programs at the local level and collaborates with national, state, and local partners to address health inequities.

Overview:

The Bureau of Chronic Disease Evaluation and Research (BCDER) oversees public health surveillance, program evaluation, and performance measurement activities for the Division of Chronic Disease Prevention which includes generating, disseminating, and interpreting data to plan, monitor and evaluate the implementation and impact of public health programs. Members of the bureau have expertise in public health surveillance, epidemiology, statistics, program evaluation and performance measurement.

Overview:

The Bureau of Cancer Epidemiology is comprised of multiple units which function to support population-level cancer research. The New York State Cancer Registry is responsible for collecting, processing, and reporting information on New Yorkers diagnosed with cancer. The Cancer Surveillance Program responds to community concerns about cancer in neighborhoods, workplaces, and schools. The program participates in investigations to help answer scientific questions about the specific concerns. The Analytic and Output Unit oversees data linkages, numerous research projects and prepares data files for public use. The Extramural Research Studies Unit works with external researchers and universities on a variety of novel research studies.
